HeartLinks Manitoba held its first annual Summer picnic after missing the last three years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. A group of 30 strong came out in the extreme heat to enjoy the camaraderie of our special group to share our stories and enjoy some great food all under the safety of a covered picnic shelter with plenty of water and drinks! After a three year absence of group gatherings, the picnic attendance definitely shows people still want to meet and connect. Visit our events page to see all the pictures and picnic happenings! We look forward to our next in person gathering at the AGM and Christmas party (but not too soon...let's enjoy our beautiful summer months to come)!
Organ and tissue donation saves lives. By registering your intent using Manitoba's online organ and tissue donor registry www.signupforlife.ca information about your donation decision will be available and accessible should it ever be required. Since the launch of the registry in 2012, more than 65,000 Manitobans have registered and the number climbs every day. Nearly everyone has the potential to be an organ and tissue donor. One donor can save the life of eight people and enhance the quality of life for another 75 through the gift of tissue donation. Registration takes two minutes and three pieces of information; name, birthday and nine-digit health number. Between 2012 when the www.signupforlife.ca onine donor registry began and 2021, organ donations and transplantations increased by 23%, with 1,328 donations and 2,750 transplantations occurring in 2021. We as a group of grateful organ recipients, will continue in doing our part to spread organ and tissue donor awareness! HeartLinks wrapped up its first in person Annual AGM and Christmas get together in 2 years. Find out more details in our Events page. 2022 marked 10 years of online service for Manitoba's online organ and tissue donor registry www.signupforlife.ca To mark this milestone a goal was set to add 10,000 new registrations by the end of the year. Transplant Manitoba pushed hard to mark the 10K in 10 milestone however, COVID-19 affected registration traffic despite their best efforts. As of January 31, 2023, the registry holds the donation decisions of 64,618 Manitobans! Due to COVID-19 some events have been either cancelled or postponed. Please visit the events page for a complete list of cancellations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will keep you informed of any upcoming changes or cancellations to our normally scheduled upcoming events.

April is Organ Donor and Tissue Awareness month and National Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week is April 24-28th. Two of our HeartLinks board members, Alan Scramstad and Mark Miles were honoured to be guests at the Winnipeg High School Hockey League awards banquet (WHSHL) to celebrate local athletes and be part of this amazing community as it works to raise organ and tissue donor awareness. Hundreds of players, coaching staff, volunteers, WHSHL executive, fans and award presenters attended this event recognizing excellence and sportsmanship. Guest speakers included Toby and Bernadine Boulet, the parents of Logan Boulet, the Humboldt Broncos defenceman who lost his life along with 15 others in a tragic bus crash, shared memories of their son's growing up years and the kind of young man he had become. They spoke of his drive and determination to be a better player when things didn't go his way, his choice to persevere and work hard and still making the effort to share his time and skills to help others. They spoke of his decision to be an organ and tissue donor and the ripple in the water created when they decided to honour his decision. That ripple became known as the #LoganBouletEffect and it saw more than 100,000 Canadians register their decisions to be donors using provincial donor registries in the weeks following the tragedy. Toby and Bernie acknowledged the accomplishments of everyone in the room and shared some advice they gave to their kids before they went on the ice - work hard - play hard and have fun!
